Dip Tube

A long tube inside a tank water heater that delivers incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank, so it heats before rising to the hot outlet at the top.

The dip tube is a plastic tube that runs from the cold-water inlet at the top of a tank water heater down to near the bottom. It exists because hot water rises and cold water sinks. By pushing fresh cold water to the bottom, the dip tube keeps it from mixing with the hot water waiting at the top to be drawn off. Without it, cold inlet water would short-circuit straight to the hot outlet and you would never get a full tank of hot water.

When a dip tube cracks, breaks off, or disintegrates, the classic symptom is lukewarm water that runs cold quickly, even though the heater seems to be working. Incoming cold mixes immediately with the stored hot, diluting every draw. A run of defective dip tubes manufactured in the 1990s made this a well-known failure, and a telltale sign is small bits of white or blue plastic clogging faucet aerators and showerheads throughout the house.

Because the symptom, not enough hot water, overlaps with a failed heating element, a tripped thermostat, or heavy sediment, a dip tube is diagnosed by elimination. It is an inexpensive part, but reaching it means draining the tank and pulling the cold inlet fitting, so the labor, not the part, sets the cost. On an aging tank, a broken dip tube is sometimes the nudge toward replacing the whole heater.

  • T&P Relief Valve (TPR) : A safety valve on every tank water heater that releases water if temperature or pressure climbs too high, preventing the tank from rupturing or exploding.
  • Thermal Expansion Tank : A small tank that absorbs the pressure increase created when water heats and expands in a closed plumbing system, protecting the water heater and valves.
  • Heat Pump Water Heater : A high-efficiency electric water heater that moves heat from the surrounding air into the tank instead of generating it directly, cutting energy use by 60 to 70 percent.
